Deface Interview

Anomie1: You have been killing trains, anyone on the west coast who paints trains has seen your work in the last couple of years. What keeps you motivated to paint so many freights?

Deface: Freights go nation wide. I've got boxcars in places I've never been and probably won't go. Plus the buffing of graff on trains is minimal. Most everything I paint on trains is still around, while the street spots usually get buffed.

Anomie1: It seems like train painting is getting to a point where almost every freight car has art on it. How do you see the evolution of this? Do you see people going over the more toy shit? Do you see people painting more grainers and oil tankers?

Deface: The trains are definatly filling up with graff.People have figured out that their shit runs on trains. Plus there's nation wide recognition. There isn't much room for toy shit, so we kick toys out the yard and paint down toy shit. You gotta respect old graff , toys usually don't. And you gotta respect the guys that put in all the work. Most of these toys don't even know what they're painting over. Grainers are definatly getting hit now, but its low on the list of what to hit first in the yard. Tankers usually just get tagged, but I have seen some quality peices on tanks.

Anomie1: You have any stories of close calls, maybe one that was particularly exciting?

Deface: Just about a month ago Wyrd and I were in the yard. We had just finished up when I saw the cops headlights coming down the tracks. These trains are in between sod fields, so it's flat and wide open all around. The cops had gotten too close to just run. The only place to go was a couple of bushes between a triangle of tracks. We hid our bags in the bushes, and then crouched there we watched the cop park. He shined his spotlight to the field oppisite us, then got out of his car with his flashlight and started looking at the wet paint on the trains. At this point the cop and his car are only about 20 yards away from us. We decided that we needed to get away fast. But there is no cover for about a half a mile all around. Just flat ground. So we decided to slowly army crawl away. Moving super slow so we didn't draw attention to ourselves, we did just that. We crawled for what seemed like forever, watching the cop's light all the while. We got away, but being that close to the cops without them finding us was definatly a close call. If that cop had just turned around and shined he would have seen us.

Anomie1: I notice that you used to paint a lot of 3-D pieces. Any plans of doing more of those in the future?

Deface: I still do. The light at the spot has to be decent or else its a pain in the ass. I usually save those for full moons and day spots.

Anomie1: Favorite porn site?

Deface: I don't watch porn, I make it.

Anomie1: Favorite author?

Deface: Stephen King

Anomie1: Favorite booze?

Deface: Blunts and beer for me.

Anomie1: What are you rocking on your Walkman these days?

Deface: Everything from Dead Kennedys to Acacia Strain to Clapton. Willhaven from Sacramento is sick. I generally just listen to rock.
